XR Perception & Interaction Lab. We build virtual and augmented reality that works with human perception, not against it.

Welcome to the XPI Lab!

The XR Perception & Interaction Lab (XPI Lab) is a research group in the Department of Computer Science at Texas State University. Virtual and augmented reality can place people inside digital worlds or layer information onto the physical one, but these technologies only work well when they respect how people perceive. When what we see doesn’t match what our bodies feel, we get disoriented, tired, or sick. When interfaces ignore how attention and perception work, they become hard to use and hard to trust.

We study how people perceive motion, space, and their own bodies in XR, and use what we learn in three ways. We design XR that is usable and comfortable across domains, from locomotion techniques that prevent cybersickness to new ways of interacting in VR. We build intelligent adaptive interfaces that use eye tracking and machine learning to sense how a user is doing and adjust in real time. And we take XR into health, training, and safety, from VR concussion screening to phone-based AR on real equipment.
